WHAT ARE PAWN POINTS?
Pawn points are special exercises and activities that are chess related. These exercises stimulate the students and keep them interested by going beyond just teaching concepts and moves in chess. Many of these exercises encourage parental involvement, and there by help to build a closer bond between the students and their parents. In addition it requires students to think critically and outside the box. Here are some examples of  Pawn Point exercises:

BEGINNER PAWN POINT EXERCISES

1. Sit down with parent and watch the movie  “Searching for Bobby Fischer”.
2. Sit down and play parent in a game of chess.
3. Have student show parent thier favorite piece on the chessboard, and also show the parent how the piece moves.

INTERMEDIATE PAWN POINT EXERCISES
1. Have student do quick research and find 1 fun fact about chess to share with the class.
2. Have student go online and set up an account to be able to access and play others on the Internet.
3. In 2-3 sentences have student explain why they like playing chess.

ADVANCED PAWN POINT EXERCISES

1. Benjamin Franklin who is one of the US founding fathers is maybe best known for his experiment with his kite and electricity.     On top of accomplishing many other things in US history, Franklin had a love for the game of chess.

    One of his quotes about chess was “Life is a kind of Chess, with struggle, competition, good and ill events”. (Benjamin     Franklin) Read and study this quote from Franklin and in 3-5 sentences, write what you think Franklin meant by this.
2. Write down 2-3 fun facts on the history of chess, and be prepared to share findings with class.
3. Go on our Yes for Chess website and watch the short video clip of the Master Daniel’s chess lesson. In 1-2 sentences write     down what the lesson was about.

HOW DOES PAWN POINTS WORK?

Students have the opportunity to gain Pawn Points 3 times a session.  Yes for Chess believes school academics should be the number one priority for students. That is why Pawn Points are totally optional.  We try to give students plenty of time to complete each exercise, thus students have the entire chess session to turn in all Pawn Points. Each Pawn Point completed earns the student 1 point. As the students accumulate points they rise in rank. In addition to a higher ranking, certain ranks earn rewards. Here is a list of the ranks and rewards, along with the amount of points needed to reach them
